It’s Okay To Not Be Okay: Prioritising Student Mental Well-Being at The Orbis School

In today’s fast-paced, achievement-driven world, the pressure on students has never been greater. Deadlines, board exams, peer comparisons, and the constant influence of social media can quietly impact a young person’s emotional well-being and self-esteem. At The Orbis School, Keshav Nagar, Pune, we believe that a child who feels seen, safe, and supported is a child who can truly thrive — academically and beyond. This belief is not just a philosophy; it is something we practise every single day.

Opening the Conversation Around Mental Health

Mental health awareness begins with breaking the stigma, and that starts with open, honest, and age-appropriate conversations. At Orbis, emotional well-being is woven into the everyday fabric of school life.

From morning circle time in the junior school to guided reflection sessions in the senior grades, students are given structured opportunities to check in with themselves and with one another. Our school counsellors also conduct open-door sessions where students can seek support without appointments, pressure, or judgment.

The message we strive to reinforce is simple yet powerful: you do not need to be in crisis to ask for help.

Creative Expression as a Tool for Healing

One of the most impactful aspects of our well-being initiatives is encouraging students to express themselves creatively. Through art, theatre, music, storytelling, and writing, students are provided with safe and meaningful ways to process their emotions and experiences.

Every year, Orbis observes Mental Health Awareness Week in alignment with World Mental Health Day. The week includes student-led art installations, spoken word performances, and storytelling sessions that allow students to share their voices openly.

Last year’s theme,
“It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” deeply resonated with students across all grades and sparked some of the most honest and heartfelt conversations within the school community.

Building Emotional Resilience from Within

At Orbis, we believe well-being is not only about managing challenges but also about building resilience and emotional strength.

The school integrates mindfulness and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) practices into the curriculum. Students across grades participate in structured SEL sessions that focus on self-awareness, empathy, emotional regulation, communication, and conflict resolution.

As a proud Spoke School for CBSE’s pilot project on Mental Health and Well-being, The Orbis School has actively implemented a wide range of age-appropriate initiatives across all grades to nurture emotional awareness, gratitude, empathy, inclusion, and decision-making skills.

Initiatives Across Different Grade Levels

For younger learners, activities such as Gratitude Jars, Thank You Card Making, storytelling sessions, and empathy-based discussions help cultivate kindness, appreciation, and emotional expression from an early age.

Middle school students engage in meaningful activities like Gratitude Mandala Art, Ripple Effect of Kindness exercises, gender sensitivity role plays, and “My Superpower – I Decide” poster-making sessions that encourage confidence, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making.

Senior students participate in debates, awareness campaigns, reflective art activities, and sessions like “Mistake Masterpieces,” where they learn to view mistakes not as failures but as opportunities for growth and resilience.

Even our physical education programme focuses not just on competition, but on the joy of movement, teamwork, and the important connection between physical activity and mental wellness.

Strengthening the Parent Partnership

We understand that student well-being extends beyond the classroom. That is why Orbis regularly organises workshops and awareness sessions for parents on recognising signs of stress and anxiety, encouraging healthy conversations at home, and creating emotionally safe environments for children.

When school and home work together with a shared language of empathy and care, children feel more supported and confident in expressing themselves.

Looking Ahead

Mental health is not a one-time initiative or a checkbox to complete. It is an ongoing commitment — to our students, our educators, and the larger community we are building together.

At The Orbis School, we are proud to be part of a growing movement that places the whole child at the centre of education — their emotions, strengths, struggles, and growth.

Because at the end of the day, the most important lesson we can teach a child is this:

Your worth is not measured by your marks.
